Bearberry Extract

Bearberry Extract
Bearberry is three species of dwarf shrubs that grow as low-lying bushes with green coloured shrubs, derived from the Uva Ursi plant and is often used as a botanical skin lightener that contains a natural form of hydroquinone. Bearberry gets its name from the edible fruit that grows on the shrub, which has been shown to be a favourite food of bears. This plant contains diverse phytochemicals, including ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oils, and resin, as well as phenolic glycosides and flavonoids, with the berries ripening later in the year and often being eaten raw. The leaves (used to created bearberry extract) are often picked during any time in the summer and dried for use in teas, liquid extracts and tablets for traditional medicinal uses.

More About Bearberry Extract

Bearberry is also commonly used as a part of cosmetic products because it helps in lightening the skin pigmentation for those with skin discolouration. As well as its use in cosmetics, bearberry aids urination and prevents the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract and has even been used in women as a menstrual remedy. While shown to be highly beneficial, bearberry should not be used more than 5 days at a time, this is due to the highly powerful compound, hydroquinone which can cause damage to the liver if consumed excessively.
